Mifflin County Regional Police Department, located in south central Pennsylvania approximately sixty miles northwest of the state capital, Harrisburg and 35 miles south of State College, home of Penn Sate University was formed in August 1993. By signing an Intermunicipal Agreement, Bratton and Derry Townships, along with Lewistown Borough formed a single police department that provided services for each of the signatory municipalities. The existing police departments of Derry Township and Lewistown Borough were thus merged, creating M.C.R.P.D. with a staff of 23.
Originally housed in the basement of the Lewistown Borough building, M.C.R.P.D. quickly outgrew the facility. M.C.R.P.D. moved its operation to a two story building but once again found more room was needed. In late 2003 M.C.R.P.D. moved to the current location on Ferguson Valley Road, Yeagertown, which formerly housed the Lewistown Substation of the Pennsylvania State Police.
Facilities were not the only things that changed since 1993. In its original form the department was divided between the Patrol Unit and the Criminal Investigation Unit. The department has since expanded its services to include a Community Relations / Crime Prevention Unit. This unit is responsible for administering the D.A.R.E. program to public and private schools in Mifflin County, overseeing the Neighborhood Block Watch Program, providing the Mifflin County School District with School Resource Officers and putting additional officers on the street through a Bicycle Patrol in the Lewistown Business District during the summer months.
Besides the three original municipalities, Burnham Borough, Brown Township, Union Township the Mifflin County Housing Authority and the Mifflin County School District now contract services from M.C.R.P.D. The staff has grown to 29 personnel to fulfill the obligations of the expanded services.
The jurisdiction of M.C.R.P.D. covers 68.8 square miles with a resident population of 18,264. The department responds to more than 8,000 calls for service each year. It isn’t surprising that the budget for a police department of this size is more than $1,700,000.00 in 2004. What does surprise many is that the cost for 24 hour police coverage for a typical family of four is just $1.05 per day.
Mifflin County Regional Police Department prepares for a bright
future by continually providing its officers with training in
diverse areas of law enforcement. Our commitment is to provide the
best service at minimal cost to the municipalities and agencies it
serves.
